Sustainability Consultant

Stephen has 25 years of experience, and possesses a comprehensive understanding of whole building performance arising from his work at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). As a researcher in sustainability for buildings, his tasks included: operations energy modelling; embodied effects modelling; the development of green building assessment tools, and design facilitation for high-performance buildings. After leaving NRCan he added building science skills in heat and moisture transfer modelling for building assemblies using first principles calculations and THERM. At CSV he has taken on the role of principal modeler with the PHPP software. Any of these skills can be brought to a new project should the need arise. 

Stephen has been active in the Canadian green building scene since the late 1990’s. He is a founding member of the Canadian chapter of the International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment, an organization that arose from the NRCan Green Building Challenge started in 1996. He served as Chair of the LEED NC Core Committee, and the Metrics and LCA Task Force at the CaGBC from 2006 to 2010 and was a founding member of the National Capital Green Building Association, which became the Ottawa Region Chapter of the CaGBC. He also serves as chair of the Board of Directors at ATHENA Sustainable Materials Institute, is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and, a member of the ASHRAE Technical Committee 7.1 addressing Integrated Building Design and Integrate Project Delivery.

Outside the office Stephen is co-coordinator of, and an instructor for, the Ottawa studio of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s Syllabus program, and section leader for snare drum in the Samba Ottawa Brazilian parade drum corps.
